BOOK: A gentleman in Moscow

Entertaining story.

So I read this story ("Gentleman in Moscow") as an experiment of sorts. Partly because I was trying to improve my english skills even more and partly because I was intrigued with the universe of the stories that are out there. This particular story is about a man who's not allowed to leave the hotel he's living in. Therefore, several "adventures" come into his life -- obviously...-- throught the others storytelling. Alexander Ilyanovic Rostov remains in his room.

He lives his life, eats, sleeps, and does everything a human being can do under such circumstances (being stuck in a hotel room). But here’s the thing: he’s not in isolation, deals with other people, make business (in the best way he can) and even has some friends, he turns out into a celebrity within the hotel staff.

On the background, the Russian Revolutions develops as a certain connection with the main character and his personal quandaries.

As a reader, I found embarrassing the fact that every other character who interacts with the main are completely aware that he CAN’T leave the room, therefore, they can manipulate him in every way, but... they don´t... and yet there are no blackmailing or other advantages from the rest of the characters. So, besides dealing with those requests from his friend for a… babysitting, sorta. Yes, I know… he does it anyway, a decision that throughout the passing years drives for him to become this little girl’s father. As she grows, she struggles with her own decisions and “her calling” among other situations.

I won’t reveal any more, partly because I don’t want to spoil the story and partly because there’s no room for much more. Not the way should be. A funny experiment indeed.
